Single camera music videos can be the result of a low budget production or an artistic choice. Some of the single camera music videos will use tracking shots to try to keep the artist in the frame through the whole video whilst simultaneously changing the environment and location they are in. Other music videos will used a fixed single camera that will not move throughout the entire production, this can allow for the artist to be more creative in their set design and choreography as they have to do it all within the frame of a fixed camera. Other single camera videos will use a moving camera but might focus on other things rather than the artist, such as the scenery or alternate people.
There are many advantages of using a single camera when creating a music video, the most obvious being the money that can be saved due to less equipment being needed to film. However it can also result in more time consuming shots and all filming needing to be done at once. This can be more expensive because if one aspect of the video goes wrong filming would have to start from the beginning. A single camera video can allow for an easily created and consistent narrative and story line. There are also disadvantages to using a single camera to film a music video, one of these being that if a mistake is made the video has to be started from scratch and another being that if the video is too artistically appealing then the viewer may pay less attention to the music. Some examples of genres that may make use of the single camera technique are alternative rock and indie. Lighting can be used in single camera videos to create many different effects, e.g. High key lighting can be used to give the illusion of being a different time of day within the video, natural lighting can show the natural passing of time. Single camera music videos can make use of many different type of shots such as: : Extreme long shot, Long shot, Medium shot, close-up, two shot, over the shoulder, medium close-up, birds eye, eye level, low angle, high angle, camera angle, and worms eye. Single camera videos can create an editorial effect by stopping the camera and moving it to another scene, this can create the same effect the a simple transition would. This still can be counted as a single camera production as only a single camera was used to film. Other editing can be done to video in post to add additional effects. Most single camera music videos will use non diegetic sound as it is easier to edit the sound in after the production of the video and also it is far cheaper than trying to record the audio as the production is happening. Using non-diegetic sound also allows for the video to be have the speed altered without altering the audio. The location of the music video will mostly be dependant on the budget of the production. If it is a high budget production and they choose to use a single camera they can spend the money saved on a better location and props to be used. Low budget productions will also most likely be filmed in a low budget location as to save money on the production where possible. Props and costumes are especially importuning in single camera videos as there is less likely to be special effects used in the video meaning the viewer will be paying close attention to the environment and costumes. All of the music videos done by Ok Go are all unique, interesting and different. Each video has its one theme and uses unique techniques to create a new video typically doing things not seen before in other music videos. These can be things such as the manipulation of the environment to create a set that looks completely different dependant on the viewing angle, and choreographing dancers to perform actions in perfect synchronisation. Majority of the videos are filmed used the artists as the main subjects of the scene, they also tend to incorporate many bright and vibrant colours.
