Assignment 3
I have chosen to rebrand BBC Three as it has undergone a major change that most television networks would never do. This is of course the moving of the channel from digital TV to Internet broadcast. This change occurred in early 2016 and saw a rebrand of the channel that had quite a negative response for the viewers. This maybe due to the rebrand not being very well executed or the removal of the channel from television. I decided that I wanted to give this channel a rebrand to see if I could do a better job than the previous rebranding done in February of 2016. I am going to rebrand BBC Three by giving it a new ident similar to that of idents in 2010, this allows me to communicate more with the past audience of the channel. I have also created a new logo for the channel, which can be used and modified into many more idents in the future
The key target audience for this rebrand are the people who used to watch BBC Three but have either stopped completely or reduced the amount they watch of the channel due to the more effort required to now watch. This audience is still within the target age range of BBC Three. I would also like to think that my ident idea could also captivate the younger half of the target audience and keep them hooked on the channel as well. The key content of the ident is the new logo and old characters revived from a previous ident. Bringing back these character can enable for new idents to be more creative and give a small and short narrative.

My final idea for my ident is based on one of the older versions of BBC Three’s ident; the ident contains the ‘blob’ characters, which morph into the new logo that I created. They will do this in a way that will firstly morph into straight vertical lines to represent the numeral three, then will keel over to create the signal indication lines of the new logo. I chose to use this idea as my final for an ident as it incorporated an old ident used by the BBC and morphed it into a new one showing the transition that the channel has made over the years moving online rather that on TV.
My final idea for my ident links with my target audience as keeps with the theme of the channel being light hearted and fun. The theme of being light hearted and fun has been used throughout the BBC Three channel and is demonstrated in my final idea in that the ‘blobs’ give it a more fun animated vibe than if I were to use real people. My final idea also stays consistent for the corporate identity put in place by BBC Three as it isn’t too serious and is web-based rather that television based. The face that my ident stays consistent with the corporate identity of BBC Three is important, as it needs to be able to communicate with the already dedicated audience of the channel. The ident conveys 3 main pieces of information, which are that it for a BBC network, it is the third channel in the network and that it is primarily web-based. The idea for my ident will be similar to that of other idents especially BBC Three ones as it is based on a past ident of the channel. My final ident is also similar to other idents as it simple and try to convey a simple message about the channel. To create and edit my ident I will be using animation software (either Maya or Blender) and image manipulation software (most likely Photoshop). I will be starting the animation and editing progress of my ident in the month of March and hope to be finished in the same month and if not early April. The editing of the ident will mostly be done within the animation software however other editing software might be used to add finishing touches. Before I start the animation of my ident there are some things I must consider. One of the main things I need to consider is putting together a schedule and giving myself a deadline. This will allow for me to always have a time specific goal to work to. I also need to plan out for such things such as budget for things such as the software needed to create the ident. I also need to account for risks, and as it is an animation rather that physically filming the risks are more computer based (such as corruption and deletion). |
